Amazon warns Kindle users to update for internet preservation

Amazon warns users of older Kindle e-readers that they need to update their device to a new software version "7th Generation". If they do not pass the critical software update, the e-readers lose their wifi internet connection.

The critical software update, of which Amazon does not disclose the details, applies to all Kindle readers from before 2013. In practice this means that all Kindle readers up to and including the fifth generation must be updated to the latest software version, as well as the Kindle Touch of the fourth generation and the Kindle Paperwhite of the fifth generation. All Kindle versions of the seventh generation and the Paperwhite of the sixth generation version update.

Those who do not update their e-reader before March will be notified that the device can no longer be connected to the internet. They can then only manually carry out the update. Amazon reports on its site which software versions the Kindles should run to a minimum in order not to lose the connection and the company also clarifies the steps users have to go through to update their amazon device support.
